My New Haircut!

For as long as I can remember, my hair has been long. My hair had become a part of my signature look, a part of my identity, really. Truly, it had become a part of The Lilac Press as well. About a year ago, however, I had started to get the itch to cut my hair, but of course, every time I went in for a cut, I decided only to get a trim. Over the past few months, once my hair reached a length past my belly button, I decided it was time. Enough was enough – I was ready to chop it all off! I had mentioned that I was thinking of cutting it to Gretta Monahan of Grettacole Salons, who of course, was ready and willing with her hair shears! I mean, who else is more capable?! After YEARS of maintaining long, long hair, I knew this drastic change would have to be at the hands of someone I could really trust!

See below for the finished product after final cut and color! I could not be more obsessed!

Gretta both cut and colored my hair. I knew I wanted to be a bit blonder, but Gretta convinced me to move out of the honey, warm blonde tones and into the icy, cool blonde family. I’m so glad she did! It feels so much more modern, sophisticated and fashion-forward!

We had been talking about, finding inspo, making mood boards and generally planning this cut for at least a month! Honestly, I’m glad that we were so thoughtful throughout the whole process because by the time it came to actually cut it, I was more than ready! Even though I had gotten to a point of just feeling beyond sick of my long hair, I did feel a tinge of nervousness before the initial bit chop. This may sound silly, but my hair acted as a bit of a security blanket for years. It was just “my thing.”

Gretta’s salon location in Back Bay (inside the Copley Westin Hotel) just got a serious makeover and renovation. We had to close down the salon for almost a month while floors, cabinets, etc were replaced and updated. See the photo below for a sneak peek – it is BEYOND gorgeous, modern, and minimalist chic, but you really have to see it for yourself to fully appreciate it!

After a month of hard work, on the day the salon reopened, Gretta and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for my much-anticipated chop! Gretta started by cutting my long ponytail dry. That first initial chop was the most nerve-racking moment, but I’m so glad we did it like that because it was perfect to donate!

Next up, Gretta shampooed me and did a hair spa treatment with a Kerastase Fusiodose mixture while she cut my hair wet. These handy treatments can be custom mixed to meet your specific needs. Considering we were about to do some serious color, Gretta gave me a combo of the brilliance formula mixed with the reconstruction formula.

After washing out the Fusiodose treatment, Gretta had my hair blowdried and flat ironed before cutting it dry to get the most precise cut.

The next day, we enlisted the help of Jillian Kirylo and Natalie Salerno to consult on my color and help us get it done. They recommended a full foil to make sure we could get the dimension and creaminess we wanted. Jillian and Natalie are major color gurus, and I fully trusted them to make me super blonde! They tag teamed my head with foils to get them done quickly. Jill is known for her color work, and I highly recommend her to anyone looking to get an icy blonde hue. Natalie touched up my cut so that it was ultraprecise and super chic!

FYI – you can book with Jillian and Natalie here.

Can’t believe I finally chopped it all!
