Magical Matcha

The word “magical” might not do this wonder food justice. To be honest, I had heard about matcha in the past, but hadn’t thought or cared to really look into it. Until now. And it’s amazing.

A friend recently mentioned that she had started ordering “matcha water” at Starbucks each morning. Naturally, the fact that there was a drink to be ordered at Starbucks that I did not know about – especially a drink that sounded like it could be right up my alley – spurred me to march right into Starbucks the very next day to try it for myself. I think the barista might have been confused at first, but she offered me 2 scoops of matcha powder in a grande ice water, and the total cost was under $2.00. I was shocked.

Upon first taste, I found the matcha to be MUCH sweeter than expected. It tastes like green tea ice cream, whereas I was expecting a more potent green tea flavor. But, it’s pretty good!

Although I do enjoy the Starbucks matcha, I’ve found that after a few sips it really just tastes too sweet. I like this brand, which I’ve found at Whole Foods. The taste is a lot more natural without any additives, making it a great way to start the morning. Not to mention that with all the benefits of matcha, why would you want to pollute that with added sugar?

Speaking of the health benefits, they’re good. Too good to believe, I think. To list a few: exceptionally high antioxidant levels, cancer-fighting, anti-ageing, blood sugar stabilizing, metabolism boosting, high fiber. This list goes on…

The best part is that the high levels of caffeine increase alertness and enhance mental clarity but without the jitters associated with too much coffee. A word of caution though – too much matcha isn’t good either. Caffeine in any form can take its toll.

This Elite Daily article really lays out all the reasons why everyone should be drinking this magical super drink! Read it for a a good laugh and some added insights.

This past weekend, we paired a pitcher of matcha water with a sliced dragonfruit. It was a healthy and refreshing start to a productive and clear-headed Sunday morning.

Have you tried matcha before? What did you think? I’d love to get your ideas for preparing it!

xoxo
