Grammy’s Irish Soda Bread Recipe

DSCN5791

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Several of you have been asking for my grandmother’s recipe, and although I have been playing around with a few other recipes, there really is nothing quite like hers. It is the simplest, easiest and the best. So, today I’m sharing this no-nonsense family recipe passed down through generations with all of you.

INGREDIENTS:

3 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 egg, beaten
1 1/4 cup milk
Raisins – as many as you like

Did you notice there isn’t actually any soda in this recipe?! 😉

INSTRUCTIONS:

Into a large bowl sift the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. With your fingertips lightly work in the butter until it is well incorporated. Add the raisins being sure they are well distributed and separated.

In a separate bowl combine the egg and milk, and stir it into the flour mixture until all the flour has been well moistened. Place the batter in a 9 x 5 inch greased loaf pan (or a pie plate) and bake for 45-50 minutes at 375ºF or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove loaf from pan and cool on a wire rack. Enjoy!

It’s the best soda bread – everyone always asks for the recipe – so I thought I’d share

I agree with you that it is misleading – I know some recipes do have baking soda! This one is the best though, of course 😉
