Clean Makeup Brushes

One of the most neglected but most important beauty regimens, in my opinion, is the regular cleaning of makeup brushes. Powder and oils can build up in the brush hairs from daily use, and without regular cleaning that junk can be transferred to your face, which you work so hard to keep fresh and glowing. The last thing any of us wants is clogged pores and unsightly breakouts.

There are lots of great brush shampoos on the market that are specifically intended for makeup brushes, but I personally like to use Johnson’s Baby Shampoo because it is gentle, but effective. Start by filling up a clean sink with water and a few drops of baby shampoo. Once the sink is nice and sudsy, drop the brushes in and let them soak for a few minutes. Put an additional dab of baby shampoo in the palm of your hand and take each brush one by one and swirl it around in your hand to work the shampoo into a lather. Rinse and repeat. You may have to repeat this process several times for each brush to get completely clean.

Place the wet brushes on a clean towel to dry for at least 24 hours. Be sure to wait until the inner part of the brush is totally dry before using again. The worst thing you can do is take a slightly damp brush and dip it into a powdery foundation.

The next day when you do use your fresh brushes, they will smell great and feel so soft and fresh against your skin. It really makes all the difference!

I’ve been using these bareMinerals brushes for years, and with the proper care they really do last. The four of these (plus a few others that cycle in and out of my makeup routine) are my staples. I use the first three daily, but I like to always have the mini Kabuki on hand just in case I need it! xo -L

Great post! I agree, I feel like washing make up brushes is not a priority in a lot of peoples routines! It is so important for the sake of your face!

It really is so important – and so worth it when it’s all done!

Nice post. I use baby shampoo too! Sometimes if I’m out of baby shampoo, I’ll use a gentle face wash since I figure if it’s safe for your face, then it should be safe for your brushes. I’ve found that cleaning my brushes every 1-2 weeks makes a big difference even in skin care over time 🙂
